This brief guide outlines the key regulatory and practical considerations for international researchers planning to conduct biological fieldwork in India in connection with ICA 2026 or other scientific visits.

Biological fieldwork in India is governed by the Biological Diversity Act (2002) and the Biological Diversity Regulations (2025). These laws apply to all foreign nationals, NRIs, and institutions with foreign participation.

NBA Approval

Prior written approval via Form I is mandatory before collecting any biological material (including arachnids).

  • Involves Mutually Agreed Terms (MAT)
  • Access & Benefit Sharing (ABS) framework
  • Process may take several months

Collaboration

International research is strongly encouraged to be conducted alongside Indian scientists or institutions.

  • Institutional MoUs
  • Joint research projects
  • Local logistical & permit support

Forest Permits

NBA approval does not grant entry to protected areas. Separate permits are required from State Forest Departments.

  • Voucher Specimens: Any newly discovered species must be deposited in an Indian Designated Repository.
  • Export: Explicit NBA permission is required to take specimens out of India. Unauthorized transport is strictly prohibited.

Any genetic or genomic data (including DNA barcodes) derived from Indian biological material is subject to the ABS framework. Publication or sharing of such data must comply with approved terms.

Legal Compliance Notice

Unauthorized collection, transport, or export of biological material is a serious legal offense under Indian law.

Penalties include substantial fines and imprisonment. Ensure all permits are finalized before beginning field activities.
